Updated COVID-19 projections: March 17, 2021
With our release on March 17, we now project 3.92 million (3.83–4.05 million) COVID-19 deaths worldwide through July 1.
Global case counts are rising, driven by the surge in Peru, Brazil, and parts of Europe, which is likely due to the spread of the P1 and B.1.1.7 variants.
If mobility increases, even in those who are vaccinated, total deaths could reach above 4 million by July 1.
However, adopting 95% mask use could save 175,000 lives in that same time.
The best strategy to reduce cases and deaths continues to be increased vaccination as well as mask use and cautious behavior, in order to reduce spread of the variants.
COVID-19 projections, including total deaths, daily deaths, daily infections and testing, hospital resource use, mask use, and social distancing, are available worldwide through July 1.
